Director of IIM Bangalore: Professor Prakash G.Apte.
IIMA is chalking out the details for the final placements for 2011 batch in February.
The A-B-C ( Ahmedabad-Bangalore-Calcutta) of the placement coordination cell at the Indian Institutes Management (IIMs) is changing. DNA has learnt that the placement units of IIMA, IIMB and IIMC, which earlier used to coordinate among themselves for making sure that placement dates do not clash, seem to be functioning not in keeping with that idea.
After holding a series of meetings and negotiations with IIMB and IIMC, IIMA has perhaps decided to go independent as far as placements are concerned. DNA tried to reach the authorities concerned at IIMA but did not get either confirmation or denial on the issue. Similarly, an e-mail enquiry sent to professor Amit Dhiman of IIMC seeking details of the issue remained unanswered. Dhiman is the placement chairperson at IIMC. However, a member of placement committee at IIMB insisted that all IIMs have the liberty to go for independent placements and they do not necessarily have to coordinate. If reports are to be believed, IIMA’s decision to adopt cohort-based placement system has caused the split.
Placement committee members of IIMB and IIMC believe that IIMA has broken the traditional way of holding placements and parted ways with them. IIMC’s fear that the cohort-based placement system is emerging as a differentiator for IIMA students is also cited as one of the reasons. Now, IIMA is chalking out the details for the final placements for 2011 batch in February. If the dates are different from that of IIMB and IIMC, then it would indicate that the dates for summer placements and final placements for 2012 batch would be different.
And they may also announce the summer placement dates after this February. Experts believe that the move might lead to chaos in the placement schedule, as it might trigger a competition within the three IIMs to get placement done first and get the best of the recruiters for their students. This means one IIM’s gain would be another’s loss. Besides, lack of co-ordination for placement dates might ruin opportunities for students. They will be left with fewer options to be absorbed by the best of the recruiters according to their specialisation and merit.
